Description
This is a barn built in the early 19th century, located immediately north-northwest of Somerswood House in South Brent. Constructed from stone rubble, it features a slate roof with half-hipped ends. The barn has a rectangular plan, with a shippon on the ground floor and a loft above, accessible via an external flight of stone steps on the west front.
The barn stands two storeys tall. The west front includes a central external flight of stone steps that lead to plank double doors, with a canopy formed by the main roof supported on timber cantilevered brackets over the loft doorway. The rear wall facing the yard is blind, with a very small opening under the eaves and a later lean-to outshut at the south end. There is a ventilation slit low down in the north end wall.
Inside, the loft floor is supported by closely spaced joists. The roof consists of seven bays with halved, lapped, and pegged collar trusses, although the common rafters and battens have been replaced. This barn is a largely complete example of a Devon stone barn of the bank barn type.
