Description
Saxon Cottage and Dial Cottage are a row of houses that have been converted into three dwellings. They date from the late 17th century and early 18th century, with some parts reconstructed in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed from a mix of sandstone and limestone rubble, featuring stone slate and concrete tile roofs.
The exterior is two storeys high and consists of a seven-window range arranged in a pattern of 4:2:1. Dial Cottage, which is at the left end, occupies two former houses and is situated at a higher elevation.
No. 1, located at the right end, has a boarded door beneath a stone lintel to the left of a double-chamfered two-light mullioned window with a painted sill and old rectangular leaded lights. There is a matching window above it and a brick end stack on the right.
Saxon Cottage, to the left, features a part-glazed door to the left of two double-chamfered mullioned windows on each floor, also with leaded lights, and another doorway on the right. It has a brick ridge stack.
Dial Cottage has a boarded door with a casement on the right and a two-light square-faced mullioned window on each floor to the left, along with a small window above the door. A sundial is mounted on the wall to the right. The left end of Dial Cottage has been reconstructed in the 20th century, featuring a door to the left of a three-light mullioned window, with a single-light and a two-light mullioned window below it. There is a small brick end stack at the change of the roofline on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
