Description

Plum Tree Cottage and Barn Cottage are a pair of houses located on the north side of The Street in Tormarton. They date back to the 17th century and incorporate some medieval masonry at the rear, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed from limestone rubble and feature a continuous stone tiled roof, along with some pantiles and a central stack.

Plum Tree Cottage, which is on the left, is two storeys high and has two windows. At the first floor, there are two 2-light casements with timber lintels. The ground floor includes a single light window, a door with a triangular hood, and a similar 2-light casement. There is a lean-to extension attached to the left, which has a door and single-light casements, as well as a 20th-century door with a triangular hood on the right. To the right, there is a small single-storey extension dated 1981. The left and right returns of the building have single light windows with timber lintels in the gable ends.

The rear of Barn Cottage features two blocked openings with 4-centred arches, the left one being taller. There is a slightly projecting wall and altered masonry above, suggesting there may have been a third arch on the left. To the right, there are remains of a weathered string and a projecting wall, along with some courses of stone tiles and quoins. A 20th-century window is located at the first floor on the left side.

Inside Plum Tree Cottage, there are chamfered and stopped beams. The interior of Barn Cottage has not been inspected. The medieval masonry is likely part of a building that was originally connected to Manor Farmhouse to the north, possibly serving as a gatehouse.
