Description
The Tormarton War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected around 1920 in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene’s in Tormarton. It honors seven men from the parish who lost their lives during the First World War, as well as two additional men who died in the Second World War.
The memorial features a Cotswold stone cross pattée with a tapered shaft, which stands on a two-stepped octagonal base set on a square plinth. The top tier of the octagonal base is inscribed with black enamel painted lettering on three sides. The central inscription reads: "REMEMBER/ THE/ MEN OF TORMARTON/ WHO/ DIED IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ 'LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND/ WE FOR ENGLAND DIED'."
To the left of the inscription are the names of four fallen soldiers, and to the right are three more names, with an additional two names listed under the inscription for 1939 - 1945.
