Description
This is an early 19th-century cast iron mile post located 800 yards to the southwest of Burbage Bridge. The mile post has a triangular shape with a dished top and features inscriptions on two faces. The northeast face indicates distances to Hathersage (2 miles), Castleton (8 miles), and Chapel-en-le-Frith (12 miles). The southwest face shows the distance to Sheffield (8 miles). This mile post is linked to the route of the Sheffield to Manchester Turnpike, which was established in the mid-18th century.
