Description
This is an early 19th-century cast iron milepost located 20 yards southwest of the entrance to Hathersage Hall. It has a triangular shape with a dished top and inscriptions on two faces. The northeast side reads: "HATHERSAGE. CASTLETON 6 MILES, CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH 12 MILES," while the southwest side states "SHEFFIELD 10 MILES." The milepost is linked to the Sheffield to Manchester Turnpike, which began in the mid-18th century.
