Description
Longshawe Lodge is a former shooting box, now houses, built for the Duke of Rutland around 1827, with later 19th-century additions. The building features ashlar and coursed squared gritstone, with coped gables and moulded kneelers, some topped with ball finials. It has ashlar ridge and sidewall stacks and stone slated roofs, presenting an irregular plan and elevations.
The northwest elevation is a complex range with five different gables, some of which are advanced, connected by pitched roof ranges or parapets that run at right angles to the gables. The windows are chamfered mullioned, ranging from three to five lights, with some transomed and others featuring semi-circular heads, all beneath hoodmoulds with stops. The building is two storeys high throughout, with varying heights and nine window bays. There are canted bay windows in the seventh and ninth bays at the northeast end; the former is parapeted, while the latter has a pitched roof.
A single-storey entrance porch is located at the eighth bay, featuring a parapet and a four-centred arch with a plain planked door. At the rear, there is a tall square tower designed to mimic the tower house tradition of the area. This tower rises four storeys and has an embattled parapet, with mullioned and transomed windows separated by flat band courses or moulded strings.
