Description
White Edge Lodge is a mid-19th century lodge designed in the style of the local 17th century vernacular. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with quoins, moulded kneelers, copings, and features a stone slated roof. The building is square in plan, with gabled elevations, ashlar ridge stacks on the side gables, and finials at both the front and rear.
The lodge has two storeys and attics, with each elevation consisting of a single bay that showcases a different window pattern, all featuring moulded surrounds. On the southeast elevation, there are 2-light chamfer mullioned windows on the ground and first floors, along with a single light opening in the attic. The windows are casements with glazing bars. The first and attic floor openings have plain dripmoulds, while the ground floor openings are linked by a substantial moulded stringcourse. A second stringcourse runs above the first floor window heads.
There is a lean-to porch at the northeast corner, which has a plain stone doorway and a plain planked door, along with a 20th century extension. White Edge Lodge is one of a pair of lodges built by the Duke of Rutland for the Longshawe Estate, the other being Thickwood Lodge.
