Description
This monument, located approximately 110 metres west of the junction with Ughill Road, dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from gritstone ashlar with horizontally tooled wallstone and features a stone slate roof. The structure consists of an obelisk set on a tiered rectangular plinth, accompanied by a single-storey wing that is accessed from the gable at the rear.
The monument has twin tapered corner pilasters on either side of a wallstone panel, which are connected at the top by a projecting band. There are two tiered ashlar plinths, both featuring projecting bands. The lower plinth bears a defaced inscription that seems to have read: 'EDGEFIELD A.D. 18--'. Above this, the obelisk is adorned with a sunken cruciform motif in the wallstone panel and is capped with a pyramidal stone.
At the rear, there is a small cell built from coursed wallstone on a plinth, which has a boarded door. Inside, there are steps leading down to a spring-water source.
