Description
Fair House Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse with panelling dated 1687 and a 20th-century addition on the right. It is constructed of coursed, squared gritstone and has a stone slate roof. The building features a baffle-entry plan that includes service rooms at the rear, while the main area has a two-room layout. It stands three storeys high with two windows on the first floor. The exterior has a chamfered plinth and large quoins. There is a panelled door on the left with quoin reveals and a deep chamfered lintel. The windows are double-chamfered mullion style with iron casements, featuring two 4-light windows on the ground floor, which have a continuous dripmould above the doorway, and two 4-light windows on the first floor under a continuous hoodmould. The second floor has four 2-light windows. The building is adorned with moulded kneelers and chamfered gable copings, and it has a short, corniced ashlar stack at the centre with a later stack on the left gable. The rear eaves are lower, and there are double-chamfered mullion windows on the left return.
Inside, the farmhouse retains extensive original panelling on the walls and doors. The left ground floor room features a bressumer beam with an arched doorhead and an oak screen to the left, while a stone heck wall is to the right. Adjacent to the heck wall is the stone sink from the former service room. There is a stone staircase leading to the first floor and an oak staircase with a flat-balustered rail leading to the attic. Evidence of a former smokehood is indicated by a soffit-morticed collar in the attic chamber above the bressumer.
