Description
Cruck barn at Walker House Farm, probably from the early 17th century, with later encasement, 18th century additions, and further alterations. The cruck frame is clad in coursed squared stone, with a roof that is partly covered in stone slates and partly in corrugated asbestos. The barn is partly two-storeyed and has four internal bays, with a later range at right angles to the rear right that is not of special interest.
The roadside front features quoins, a blocked quoined cart-entry that now has a window, later windows to the right, square and slit vents, and a roof with stone slates on the right and corrugated asbestos on the left. The rear has quoins on the right and a quoined cart-entry. The right return includes a blocked quoined doorway on the left, an inserted door on the right, and a quoined hatchway in the gable leading to the loft, along with square vents.
Inside, there are four pairs of crucks; the left-hand pair is set close to the end wall, with the left cruck truncated. The second pair has a tie-beam and collar at the apex, the third has wall-ties and a collar at the apex, and the fourth features a tie-beam with curved braces from the crucks to the large scantling purlins. The interior also has a square-sectioned ridge-piece, old rafters, and a wall plate, with a loft in the right-hand bays. There is a window on the first floor with the mullions removed and a similar one-light attic window. The left return (cross-wing) has recessed chamfered mullion windows, with the mullions removed, featuring three lights on the ground floor left and two lights on the first floor right. This building is included for group value only.
