Description

The Anchorage and Pygmalion Gifts is a house located on Fylingdales New Road in Robin Hood's Bay, dating from the early 18th century and featuring alterations and a basement shop. The building is constructed from roughly herringbone-tooled sandstone, which varies in appearance, and has a pantiled roof with a brick chimney. It stands three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and is divided into three narrow bays.

The basement includes a small blank window on the right, with an opening stallriser below it. Access to the entrance terrace is via steps that have a 20th-century wrought-iron handrail, leading to a glazed door and a lean-to porch with a small door on the right. The left side of the building features two late 19th-century paired sash windows. On the first floor, there are three 12-pane sash windows, two of which are early 19th-century, while the right window is from the 18th century, all set in wooden box frames. The second floor also has three 12-pane sash windows.

The windows have been modified from their original shorter, wider stone-mullioned design, of which traces can still be seen. The building has a coved eaves course and a parapet, with a raised attic above that features two wide three-light windows. The right end chimney has been rebuilt. The right return of the building displays older windows on the top floor. The rear elevation, which faces King Street, shows a modern door beneath a gabled bracketed hood, along with a modern window above, both set within old stonework.
