Description
The guidestone, likely from the early 18th century, is made of hard gritstone and resembles a Roman altar. It features a plinth, a shaft, and a slightly projecting head, standing at about 2 feet high. The north face is inscribed with "To Stoklay" (referring to Stokesley), while the south face reads "To Kirby" (referring to Kirkbymoorside). On the west face, there are incised hands pointing in both directions. The upper part of the stone slopes down at the back. There are mile numbers, possibly located on the plinth, but they are now indecipherable.
