Description
The County Primary School and No. 36 is a school and master's house built in 1874, as indicated by a plaque on a buttress. The building is constructed from coursed squared tooled stone, featuring alternating quoins and a stepped plinth on its projections. It has a Welsh slate roof adorned with fancy clay ridge tiles and is designed in an irregular U-plan, showcasing an eclectic mix of Gothic and Italianate architectural styles.
On the left side, the 1-storey, 4-bay school features a wide projecting wing with a 4-light mullioned window that includes two transoms, a timbered gable end, and decorative bargeboards. An extruded porch on the right has a segment-headed entrance with double roll moulding and a pyramidal roof topped with a spike finial. To the left of the wing, there is an entrance extension with a doorway that has a 2-centred head. The three narrow bays to the right of the wing are separated by buttresses and contain large mullioned-and-transomed windows.
The three-storey stair tower has two narrow windows on each floor, with the upper windows set beneath pointed relieving arches and topped with a pavilion roof. There is also a doorway and a large stack on the right return, along with swept eaves supported by brackets.
