Description
The Church of St Michael and St George, built in 1924 and designed by Leslie Moore, is located on Church Street in Castleton. Constructed from rockfaced snecked brown sandstone with a green slate roof, the church features a west tower, nave, south porch, chancel, and north vestry, all designed in a style reminiscent of the mid-14th century.
The square west tower is buttressed and has a stepped-in upper stage, with a two-centred arched west doorway. It includes two- and three-light bell openings beneath a low battlemented parapet. The gabled porch leads to cusped two-light windows on the south side of the nave. The north wall of the nave displays a high filled arcade, suggesting that an aisle may have been originally planned. The chancel features a Carnaervon-arched priest's door, with south windows similar to those in the nave, and an east window adorned with cusped reticulated tracery. The pent vestry has a door that mirrors the design of the priest's door.
Inside, the church has plaster walls with ashlar dressings, and the arcading seen on the exterior is reflected on the north wall. Notable interior features include finely carved wooden screens at the chancel and tower arches, a panelled sanctuary with a reredos painting of the patron saints, and an enriched communion rail. Additional elements include an aumbry, piscina, sedilia, and a hexagonal stone font. All internal details are well designed and crisply executed.
A wood plaque inside the church commemorates a grant of £150.00 from the Incorporated Church Building Society, which stipulated that all seats should be free for parishioners and that an annual collection be taken for the benefit of the Society. The church was inspired by the Rev. Sydney Smith, who served as vicar from 1918 to 1928.
