Description

Danby School and the master's house is a school building from the third quarter of the 19th century, constructed from coursed squared sandstone with a Welsh slate roof featuring stone dressings and stacks. The structure likely consists of three sections built close together in time.

The central section is a single storey with two wide bays, featuring a boarded door with decorative hinges set within a multi-moulded two-centred arch that has a hoodmould. Flanking the door are two- and three-light casement windows, which have cusped heads. A large projecting offset stack, which includes a niche displaying a coat-of-arms, is also present.

To the right, there is a two-storey gabled wing that has mullioned and transomed windows with pointed heads. The lower section has a two-light window, while the upper section features a three-light window set under a relieving arch. The ridge stacks are stepped and corniced.

The projecting left wing is taller and has a three-light window with pointed heads, along with an owl hole in the gable. There is an extruded porch that contains a Tudor-arched boarded door.

At the right end of the building is the master's house, which has a three-bay, one-and-a-half-storey front on the right return. This section features a low doorway with a two-centred arch and four mullioned and transomed windows with pointed heads, three on the ground floor and one in a half-dormer.

A pent extension on the right is noted as not being of special interest.
