Description
Danby Mill is an early 19th-century water mill located on the west side of Ainthorpe Lane in Danby. The building is constructed from coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof with stone dressings. It stands four storeys high and has three bays.
The ground floor includes a studded stable door at the bottom right, set under a heavy lintel, and a small window at the bottom left. On the first floor, there are two small windows above the door and a larger window to the left. Each upper floor has three evenly spaced windows. Although all windows now have modern joinery, the casements include glazing bars that are in keeping with the building's character. At the right end of the structure, there is a stepped and corniced chimney, and the gables are coped on kneelers set above the eaves level.
To the left of the main building, there is a low wheelhouse that still contains the water wheel. Access to the interior was not possible at the time of the survey.
