Description
The Grange is a house built in 1810, constructed from finely-coursed tooled-and-margined sandstone with ashlar dressings. It features a slate roof with stone copings and stacks. The entrance front has two storeys and three bays, with a plinth, alternating V-jointed quoins, and a first-floor band. To the left of the centre is a later 19th-century gabled porch. The windows are 12-pane sashes with lintels carved as false voussoirs and projecting cills. A central tall round-arched stair window has V-jointed voussoirs and interlaced glazing in the head. The building has a dentilled eaves cornice and blocking course, with paired end chimneys that have conjoined cornices. The right return is blank except for an off-centre six-panel door with a patterned overlight, which is accessed by six moulded steps. There are also blank window-sized panels flanking the door, with similar lintels as those on the front. The rear elevation has four bays with 12-pane sashes that have similar lintels rising to the first-floor band.
Inside, there are good doors with six beaded panels in architraves throughout the house. The drawing room features a marble chimneypiece with corner paterae. Window shutters are present throughout, and the staircase has stick balusters and shaped tread ends leading up to the attic. The hall and staircase have a moulded cornice, ceiling panels, and roses. The dining room has a moulded cornice with a rose-and-palmette pattern, and there is an enriched segmental arch over the passage.
