Description
This is a former school, now a community centre, and a former master's house, dating from 1868. The building is constructed of stone with a slate roof. The school itself is a single-storey, four-bay structure. The first bay projects forward under a gable, which has a small gable bellcote. The building features weathered buttresses and coped gables. The windows have small-paned glazing. They are single-chamfered mullioned windows with shouldered lintels over the lights. The first bay has paired two-light windows with relieving arches and shields; one shield displays the date, and the other bears the letters "R.R". The other bays contain four-light windows. The right return of the first bay has an entrance with a shouldered lintel, a plank door with strap hinges and two leaded lights. The left return is five bays long, with the first bay gabled and lower, and featuring 3:4:4:4:3-light windows. A brick stack is located at the rear.
The master’s house is two storeys high and two bays wide, with the second bay projecting under a gable and featuring a corbelled first floor. There is a drip mould over the ground floor. The ground floor windows are three and four-light mullioned. The first floor has a two-light window within a gabled half-dormer, and a three-light window to the second bay. The entrance has a slate canopy, a shouldered lintel, a plank door with strap hinges, and two leaded lights. A stone stack is positioned at the rear. The building is included on the list for its group value.
