Description

The wall to the grounds of Stanhope House is approximately 47 meters long and has a return to Spital Road. Its date is uncertain, but it is probably medieval. The wall is made of stone and features roll moulding along the coping. There is a recessed quadrant at the corner and a stone arch leading to the gate on Spital Road, which was altered around 1939. At the eastern end of the wall, there are two groups of vertical grooves, believed to have been made from sharpening arrowheads. The name Mark Rake, which suggests the presence of archery butts in the street, supports this interpretation.
