Description
Bainley Bank Cottage is a farmhouse, likely built in the mid-18th century, with the main house possibly rebuilt at that time from an earlier longhouse. It is constructed of coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone, with the downhouse part being less regular. The roofs are pantiled, featuring stone ridges, copings, kneelers, and stacks.
The building has two storeys with two wide bays and a right-hand through-passage bay in the main house. The downhouse has one and a half storeys and two bays, with the left bay serving a domestic purpose. There is a boarded door with a plain lintel leading to the hearth passage. The ground floor has a replaced stone-mullioned window with three lights, while the upper floor has a two-light stone-mullioned window. The original two-light stone-mullioned window in the downhouse retains leaded casements. Block kneelers support the structure, and there are corniced chimneys at the left (parlour) end and behind the passage. The downhouse projects slightly and features a blocked vent slit in the right bay, a boarded door on the return, a mullioned window, and an owl hole in the gable. A sloped buttress has been added to support the house's end wall, and there is a lean-to rear dairy extension.
