Description

Low Broom House Farmhouse, possibly originally a longhouse, dates from the early 18th century and was raised later in the 18th century with additional alterations. It is constructed of roughly-coursed sandstone, with the upper courses more evenly tooled. The roof is pantiled, featuring stone copings and kneelers, a tiled ridge, and stone and brick stacks. The farmhouse has a hearth-passage plan and is two storeys high with three bays. To the left is a downhouse that is one storey with an attic and one wide bay, and there is a one-storey, one-bay outhouse set back.

The downhouse has a passage door on the right and another door on the left, both of which are 20th-century with upper glazing. There is a 20th-century small-paned casement window between the doors and a low three-paned attic window. The main house features a blocked (or false) doorway to the right of the center and late 19th-century sash windows in wood box frames, with those on the ground floor positioned under tooled lintels. The house has block kneelers and stone end chimneys, with the right part rendered. The downhouse has a rebuilt brick ridge stack and another stack at the front left. The outhouse on the left includes a stable door and a six-pane window.

Inside, the ground floor is beamed throughout. A fire beam remains in place in the houseplace, while a spice cupboard has been moved to the location of a blocked fire-window. There are also some two-panelled cupboards and a late Georgian bedroom fireplace.
