Description
Fryup Hall is a large farmhouse from the mid to late 18th century, which may have been rebuilt from a former longhouse and retains a hearth-passage plan. The building is constructed from coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a pantiled roof with stone dressings. The main block is two storeys high and has three bays, presenting a nearly symmetrical façade. To the right, there is a one-storey kitchen wing with a wide bay that includes a half-glazed through-passage door.
The main house has a central half-glazed six-panel door set beneath a heavy lintel with a triple keystone. The windows are circa 1900 sash types in their original openings, featuring wide, keyed lintels—except for the first-floor centre, which has a lintel designed to imitate voussoirs. The windows also have projecting sills and raised V-jointed alternate-block jambs that reflect the quoins of the building. A moulded eaves cornice adds detail to the roofline, which is high-pitched and swept, with a stone ridge, copings on moulded kneelers, and corniced end stacks on both the house and the kitchen wing.
The rear elevation consists of four irregular bays on the main house, with four 19th-century sash windows, one of which has glazing bars, and a fixed light with glazing bars. There is also a small late 19th-century sash window in the kitchen wing.
The interior has not been inspected, but a pleasing cut-string staircase with two turned balusters per tread is noted in an illustration.
