Description

The Bay Hotel is a Grade II listed hotel located on the north side of The Dock in Robin Hood's Bay. It consists of two buildings constructed in the early and later 19th century. The exterior features coursed herringbone tooled sandstone, with some parts rendered. The roof is pantiled, with stone ridges, copings, and kneelers, and includes one stone chimney along with others that are brick or rendered.

The earlier section of the hotel has a T-plan layout with a central leaf projecting, while the right bay is concealed by a later addition. The building stands two storeys tall with a prominent basement. A wide flight of steps leads to the entrance, which is located in the left return of the projecting gabled bay that has a black rendered basement. There is a shop in the left return basement and a storeroom beneath the stairs, with a 12-pane sash window above.

The gable end features 4-pane sashes and a stone chimney at the peak. The left bay has 16-pane sashes and a brick end chimney. The right extension is three storeys high with two windows and is rendered. The entrance door has three vertical panels arranged in a 3+3 configuration, and there are 2-3, 3-, and 2-light public house windows to the right. On the first floor, there are two canted oriel windows with altered glazing, and on the second floor, there are 4-pane sashes. The building has file bands at both the first floor and second floor cill levels, and a hipped roof with a rendered corniced chimney at the right end. The hotel is included for its group value.
