Description

The building is an outbuilding located to the southeast of West Challacombe Manor, dating from the 15th century, with some truncation and alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of local coursed rubble stone and features a slate roof, while the north gable wall is built on bedrock. The building consists of a two-storey outbuilding attached to a one-storey lean-to, which has a corrugated iron roof.

The outbuilding retains two bays of a former seven-bay structure that originally ran north-south. The south gable wall of the outbuilding is not tied in and is likely a 19th-century addition. The lean-to to the south is built against the remaining east wall of the outbuilding.

Inside, there is one surviving raised cruck truss, with the feet of the blades positioned just below loft level, resting on wooden pads in the walls. The small square yoke is tenoned and pegged into the blades, and the collar is cranked and pegged, marked with carpenter's mark III. The roof includes 19th and 20th-century purlins, rafters, and a ridge. There are also remains of a truss blade and pad in the east wall where the inserted south gable meets the east wall, along with four additional pads with infill where blades would have been located in the east wall beneath the lean-to.

This outbuilding is included for its group value, the retention of 15th-century fabric, and its relationship to the 15th-century manor house, representing a fragmentary but rare example of a 15th-century outbuilding within a small manor house complex, and it groups with the wall and entrance of the same date.
