Description
This building is a shippon, possibly from the 17th century or earlier, located about 30 metres northeast of Sweaton Farmhouse in Widecombe-in-Ponsworthy. It is constructed from granite rubble and features a slated roof, with simple decorative slate-hanging on the verges of both gables. The shippon consists of two compartments divided by a stone wall approximately 2 metres high. It is a single-storey structure with a loft.
The north gable wall, which faces the road, is the most notable feature of the building, having three ventilation slits at the lower level and one above, along with a drain outlet at the base of the wall. The west wall, which faces the farmhouse, includes two ventilation slits in the northern section, with a doorway between them that has a plain granite lintel. Above this doorway, to the left, is a loft door fitted with iron strap hinges. The southern section contains a doorway to the left and a window to the right, both with wooden lintels; the window has been altered and features a large piece of granite beneath it that may have served as a feeding trough. The southern gable wall has a loft doorway with a wooden lintel, and the plank door is equipped with old iron hinges.
Inside, the roof and loft floor timbers were renewed in the 20th century. The southern section has a simple drain in the centre of the floor, while the northern section was found to be full of cow dung during inspection.
