Description
Ponsworthy Bridge is a bridge that likely dates from the early 19th century, although it has 17th-century abutments. The parapets were rebuilt in the late 19th or early 20th century. Constructed of granite rubble, the bridge is approximately 3 meters wide and features a single, flattened elliptical arch made with roughly-shaped voussoirs. The abutments beneath the bridge are built from large dressed blocks of granite, which probably date back to the 17th century or earlier. The parapets have copings made of roughly-cut granite blocks. At the north-east end, there is an old granite block set into the north-west parapet, which appears to be a datestone. It is carved with three sets of figures, reading 16 at the top, 66 in the middle, and 1911 at the bottom. Records from the Quarter Sessions Order Books in the Devon Record Office indicate that there were regular payments for repairs to the bridge between 1840 and 1854.
