Description
Ponsworthy House is an early 19th-century house located in Widecombe-in-Ponsworthy. It features solid rendered walls, likely made of stone, and a slated roof with deeply projecting eaves. The gables have stone copings supported by shaped corbels, and there is a chimneystack at the apex of each gable, with the left one made of granite ashlar and the right one rendered. The house has an L-shaped plan with a double-depth front range and stands two storeys tall. The symmetrical front has three windows, which are framed by eared cement architraves and have 20th-century wood and plastic glazing. The granite window-sills are supported by shaped brackets at each end.
The central doorway features a six-panelled door with three-panelled reveals, where the lowest tier of panels is flush. The porch, which is now enclosed, is supported by two granite Doric columns of slightly eccentric design, and the entablature has been replaced.
The interior has only been partly inspected. The left-hand front room contains panelled shutters and a simple original wooden chimneypiece. There is an open well staircase made of wood, featuring column-newels and thin square balusters. The rear wing includes two large fireplaces with plain granite lintels. In 1844, the house was known as Linchover and was owned and occupied by Henry Caunter, as recorded in the Devon Record Office's Widecombe tithe map and apportionment.
