Description

Ponsworthy Mill is a house that was formerly a mill and mill house, likely built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of granite rubble, painted at the front, with a slated roof and a small rendered chimneystack on the left gable. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the house part positioned at right angles to the road. This section features a two-room layout with a central passage leading to a staircase at the back, while the mill building is located at the end farthest from the road.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front. The windows have granite lintels, with low wide windows on the ground storey and tall narrow ones above, all fitted with 19th-century casements that include glazing bars. The entrance features an old plank door with an inserted window in the centre. The inward face of the mill building has an old plank door to the right on the ground storey and a 19th-century casement window with glazing bars to the left. There is also a ruined single-storey lean-to against the gable wall of the mill.

At the rear of the property is an iron mill-wheel, which is moulded with the maker's name, WILLCOCKS & SON, BUCKFASTLEIGH; however, the wooden spokes and paddles have mostly rotted away. Fronting the road is a substantial garden wall made of large-scale granite rubble, accompanied by two plain granite gateposts. Although the interior of the house and mill has not been inspected, a provisional list from 1977 noted that it retains much of the original machinery, including wooden gearing and belt drives.
