Description

WIDECOMBE-IN- SX 67 SE THE-MOOR 5/197 Shippon about 10 metres south-west - of Oldsbrim Farmhouse, including the stone wall extending across the lower end of the farmyard GV II

Shippon. Probably C17 or C18. Granite rubble. Roof covered with corrugated iron. East wall, facing farmhouse, has a small doorway with granite lintel to left, and a larger doorway with C20 wood lintel to right; both have old plank doors. Gable- wall to road has 3 ventilation slits, now glazed, at ground-storey level. Beneath them is a roughly-made drain outlet. In the upper storey is a larger opening with granite lintel, probably a former loft door; it is covered with corrugated iron. The interior seems to have no features, although a central drain may survive under the rubbish on the floor. The rear wall shows clear signs of heightening internally. Behind the shippon at the right-hand end is a granite lean-to with a roof-covering of corrugated iron. The walling includes at least 2 upright granite posts. Running at right-angles from the left-hand end of the front wall of the shippon is a high- quality wall of coursed granite rubble. The left-hand end, which is about 2½ metres high, has a row of concrete-block buildings, probably pigstys, on the farmyard side; these almost certainly replace an earlier structure.
