Description
This building is a former railway goods shed, now used as a warehouse, likely constructed around 1872 with a minor addition in the mid-20th century. It is built from stone rubble and features red-brick arches, topped with a slated roof. A stone chimney with red-brick dressings is located on the southwest corner. The single-storey structure has large, round-arched wagon entrances on the north and south gable walls, with the northern entrance equipped with sliding doors. There is a similar opening on the west side for offloading goods, which has a pent-roofed wooden canopy above it. On the east side, there are two six-paned windows. The building has boxed eaves-cornices and plain bargeboards, along with a small red-brick addition, likely an office, at the southwest corner. Inside, the roof features a kingpost-and-ridge design. The Buckfastleigh, Totnes and South Devon Railway, which this goods shed served, opened in 1872 and connected Totnes to Ashburton. This line was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1897 and was closed in 1962. None of the other railway buildings in Ashburton are listed.
