Description
The Old Fire Station, located to the rear of Nos. 10, 12, 12A, and 14 on St Lawrence Lane in Ashburton, is a former fire station that has been converted into a store. It dates from the late 19th century and is constructed of stone rubble with red and cream brick dressings. The building features a slated roof and has a red and cream brick chimney on the rear gable.
The layout includes a fire-engine house on the right with a firemen's room behind it, and a ladder and hose store on the left. Access is provided by a narrow passage from St Lawrence Lane. The structure is one storey tall with a loft at the rear and has an asymmetrical front, characterized by twin gables and a pent-roof to the right. The entrance consists of half-glazed double doors, and there is a 2-light mullioned and transomed window to the right. The ladder store is open-fronted and features patterned bargeboards. Inside, the building has a kingpost-and-ridge roof.
