Description

Tugela House Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel, built in the late 19th century. The front is solidly rendered, and it features a hipped slate roof on the left side with rendered chimneys. The building stands three storeys high and is three windows wide, designed in a classical style.

The central doorway is flanked by pilasters and topped with a segmental pediment. The door itself is a six-panelled design, with the two bottom panels flush and the two top panels now glazed. The windows on the ground floor are triple-sashed and also flanked by fluted pilasters. On the second storey, the central window is accompanied by fluted pilasters and bracketed cornices, while the outer windows are canted bays with similar cornices but plain pilasters. The third storey windows also have fluted pilasters.

Notably, all the first and second floor windows have been replaced with plastic windows. The front of the building is divided into four unequal sections by stringcourses above the ground storey windows, which align with the capitals of the pilasters on the second storey, and at the sill and window-head level on the third storey. Each section is flanked by pilasters: rusticated on the bottom stage and fluted on the second, third, and fourth stages, with the pilasters on the second stage standing on high panelled pedestals. The building features a deep eaves-cornice supported by paired brackets.
