Description
No. 71 Barton Street is a small house that has been converted into commercial premises and storage. The front was rebuilt in the 19th century but is likely based on earlier fabric from the 17th century. The building features a brick front, which may be facing timber-framing, a tile roof, and a brick stack. It has a small two-bay plan that runs parallel to the street, with a side entrance and a 19th-century rear extension. The high parapet hides a small section of roof that slopes down to a central gutter, leading to a steep-pitched roof that descends to low eaves at the rear, with a coped gable next to No. 72. The house is two stories tall and has one window. The first-floor window is a plain square light with a concrete lintel. On the ground floor, there is a square 19th-century display window and, to the left, a part-glazed 19th-century door with a small transom light above. The ground-floor brickwork, up to the sill level of the upper window, has been painted. A stone string in a billet form features a high blocking course at the concrete-coped parapet. At the rear, there is a 18th or 19th-century raking two-light dormer. It may have originally been part of a pair of dwellings with No. 70 next door, but the front has been completely restructured and is now only partly in use. The interior has not been inspected, but it likely contains some early framing. This building is an interesting example of a smaller-scale 17th-century urban property.
