Description

No. 68 Barton Street is a house with a shop, dating from the 17th century, with a front that was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill, a painted brick front, a tile roof, and brick stacks. The front block has a parapet that runs parallel to the street and extends across Yarnell's Alley to the right, with a long back wing. The principal stack is located at the rear of the front block. The building has three storeys and a basement, with two windows on the front. The second floor has two 12-paned sash windows above a large central sash window with 16 panes on both the first and ground floors. These windows are set in wide V-joint voussoirs and are housed in exposed moulded boxes. To the left of the front is a glazed 20th-century door, and to the right is an arched opening leading to the alley. In the alley, there are three posts on stone bases supporting a heavy plate in front of a square panel-framed wall. To the left is an entrance door with a cambered head. The long back wing has two storeys with an attic and a very steep-pitched roof. The end gable is made of brick, while the flank wall features square panel framing with brick infill on the ground floor and plaster panels above. There is one casement window at the eaves on the first floor and three varied casement windows below. A 17th-century brick stack is located at the inner gable end, behind the front block. The interior has not been generally inspected, but at the rear of the shop, there is a deep chamfered beam with stops, and the cellar has been filled.
