Description
No. 74, Barton Street is a house with a shop, dating from the 18th century, built on an earlier structure. It is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork with a tile roof and a brick stack. The building has very low ceiling heights, and the upper floor has been modified. The front roof slope has a low pitch, while the rear roof is steeply pitched. The building is three storeys and has a basement, with a two-window front. At the eaves are two-light casements dating from the 18th or early 19th century, with a horizontal bar and four panes of glass, set in exposed moulded boxes. These were likely replacements for earlier 12-pane sashes, and are protected by brick voussoirs, without cills, at the first floor. The ground floor features a symmetrical shop front from the early 19th century, with 25-pane bow windows sitting on 20th-century brick stall-risers. A central four-panel door has an eight-pane transom light, all set within pilasters and topped with small, modillion-like brackets to the cornice. A brick stack is visible to the right, positioned in front of the ridge. To the left, in the adjoining Hughes Alley, a structural post is located approximately 1.5 metres from the street front. A raking dormer is present on the rear roof slope. The interior has not been inspected, but the low floor-to-ceiling heights suggest an underlying structure from the 17th century or earlier.
