Description
No. 77, Barton Street is a house in a row, largely rebuilt in the late 19th century, with origins in the late 17th century. The building is constructed of stretcher bond brickwork, possibly with a cavity wall, and has a tile roof with brick rear stacks. It extends to cover an alley on the right, incorporates a stair turret to the rear right of the main front rooms, and has a late 19th-century rear wing. The house is three storeys high and has two windows across the front. It features four-pane over eight-pane sash windows with rendered voussoirs. A mid-19th century shop front is present, with a console fascia and a deeply recessed glazed door with a transom light. A brick arch provides access to the adjacent alley.
The interior has undergone substantial modification, including the installation of Victorian fireplaces and a rebuilt roof structure. However, remnants of an 18th-century winder staircase remain, including a section of handrail with a Doric newel post. Some light panel framing exists in the party wall on the right side at second floor level. The basement contains a segmental brick vault and a brick floor.
