Description
This is a late 18th-century house in a row, with shops incorporated on the ground floor. It is located on the north side of Barton Street in Tewkesbury. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork and has a tile roof. It is three storeys high, with a basement, and has a two-window front.
At the first and second floors are tripartite sash windows, with a 4:12:4-pane configuration. Each window has an arched central light, featuring Gothick interlaced bars to a V-joint lintel. The lintel is topped with a fluted key stone and cornice and sits on a stone sill. The ground floor of number 9 has a 19th-century shop front with pilasters, a two-pane display window, and a part-glazed door set under a shallow transom light, accessed by two stone steps. Number 10 has a 2-pane shop front with a recessed door to the right, also with panelled reveal.
The building is topped by a high, coped parapet above a moulded stone cornice, which is raised to the centre as an open pediment. Above this pediment is a blank oculus with four stone keys. Behind the parapet are paired gabled roofs that meet at a central valley. A straight joint in the brickwork marks the division between this building and the adjacent number 11. Service wings, with 19th-century windows, extend to the rear.
The interior of number 10 includes a mid-19th-century open-well staircase and plain beams. Number 9 has a similar staircase and a late 18th-century fireplace to the front. The early 19th-century shop fronts are a notable survival.
