Description
No. 76 Barton Street is a house with a shop, featuring an early 19th-century front that incorporates earlier elements. The front is made of painted brick, while the structure itself is timber-framed with brick nogging, topped with a tiled roof and a brick stack at the rear. This small property also covers Fletcher's Alley to the left and includes a long rear wing. It has two storeys and two windows, with 4-pane sash windows (originally 12-pane) set within brick voussoirs, above a 19th-century shop front that has two large plate-glass panes and a door set back to the left. This is topped by a deep fascia with a moulded cornice that also covers the alley entrance. The building features a high coped parapet, and no stack is visible.
Set back from the alley entrance is a 16th-century chamfered door surround with a cambered head, beneath a very heavy square bressumer. Inside the alley, approximately 3 meters from the front, there is a very large chamfered beam and a smaller one. At the back, in the left wall, a post is set on the remains of a plate. The alley wall to the right is made of brickwork and includes a cast-iron vent, approximately 400mm square, with an intricate geometrical grille. The wing is constructed with square panel framing and brick, and has a felted roof. The interior has not been inspected.
