Description

No. 83 Barton Street is a house with a shop, featuring an early to mid 18th century front built on 16th or 17th century materials. It has Flemish bond brickwork, timber-framing, tile roofs, and a brick stack. The building has a parallel-plan layout, partly extending over Mason's Court to the left, which it shares with Nos 81 and 82. There are two rear ranges with steep-pitched roofs. The structure is three storeys high and has two windows, with 12-pane sashes set in moulded exposed boxes beneath wide brick voussoirs, fluted keystones, a cornice, and stone cills. The shop front, dating from the mid 19th century, features pilasters and consoles, a recessed central door, and arched lights on panelled stall risers and returns. To the right is a brick stack. The upper courses of brickwork leading to the concrete-coped parapet have been rebuilt. The two-storey rear ranges include 20th century raking dormers below flush roof-lights, and the first section has a 2-light 18th century casement with a moulded mullion that rises through the eaves as a dormer. The outer gable displays horizontal boarding. Inside, the main chamfered bressumer of a jetty is located within the shop front, and a longitudinal beam with mortices indicates a previous division into two rooms. On the first floor, there are remnants of substantial framing and various 18th century panelled doors, including one internal door with the upper part glazed with nine thick crown glass panes. In the attics, the timbers of an earlier steeply-pitched roof can be seen in the front range.
