Description

66 Barton Street is a house in a row of buildings, currently divided into several occupations as of January 1992. It dates from the early to mid-16th century, although the front part was largely rebuilt in the late 20th century. The house is timber-framed with tension bracing at the front, a tile roof, and a brick stack at the rear. It features a steep-roofed jettied structure that extends over an open passageway to the left, along with a projecting rear wing that has a half-hipped gable end.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a two-windowed facade. All windows are 20th-century replacements with small panes. There are two-light gabled dormers above a three-light and a four-light window on the first floor, and two-light and three-light slight bow windows on the set-back ground floor. To the left, there is a glazed door leading into a through passage within the property, which has entrance doors. The open passageway is stone-paved; the left wall is framed with brick nogging and a heavy wall-plate, while a very large structural post is located approximately 2.5 meters back on the right side, where the wall is mainly brickwork. The wing retains some early braced framing and one large corner post. There are two raking dormers and two- and three-light casements in the wall facing the alley, with the framework filled with brick-on-edge nogging. The interior has not been inspected but is said to have been significantly restructured.
