Description

Clare Cottage is a house or house row, now used as offices, dating from the 16th century, with elements from the late 17th or early 18th century, and some late 20th-century alterations. The ground floor is constructed of painted brick, while the first floor is tile-hung, featuring both plain and fishscale tiles. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has a late 17th or early 18th-century three-bay range that runs parallel to the street, along with a 16th-century cross-wing to the left. It is two storeys high, with a garret in the cross-wing, and is set on a stone plinth. The roof of the cross-wing is half-hipped, and there are brick ridge stacks at either end of the right range. The windows are arranged irregularly, with a single-light garret casement in the wing and a 20-pane glazing bar sash on the first floor. The right range features three three-light casements. There are two panelled doors with flat bracketed hoods, one at the left end of the wing and one to the left of the centre of the right range. Additionally, there is a plain boarded door to the right of the centre of the right range.

Inside the wing, it is likely that the building was originally jettied at the front. There is a large fireplace on the right side wall of the ground floor, which has herringbone brickwork and an elongated four-centred arched bressumer with leaf decorations in the spandrels. The roof has been raised and rebuilt with side purlins, and exposed timbers can be seen in both ranges.
