Description
The gazebo-cum-boathouse, formerly known as Lake House, is a Grade II* listed structure from the first half of the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with occasional grey headers in Flemish bond and features a plain tile roof. The building has a square plan and is built over a lake, with its rear wall resting on the bank.
Each of the three sides, apart from the lake side, has a semi-circular headed arch, which is adorned with red and grey brick voussoirs. The arch walls are thicker than the first floor, creating a plinth that rises above the arches. A moulded wood eaves cornice runs along the top. The roof is pyramidal, topped with a small brick chimney stack at the apex.
On the lake side, there are single glazing bar sashes on each side elevation. The lake end features a weatherboarded canted bay with a leaded roof, which includes one glazing-bar sash on each side and a tall round-headed glazing-bar sash in the center, topped with a triangular pediment.
Access to the first floor from the bank elevation is through a door with six slightly recessed panels, possibly with a replaced flat corniced hood. This door is reached by two opposing flights of nine steps, each with channeled cement render and a plain iron handrail. There is an opening, now without a door, in the wall of the steps beneath the door, leading to a passage within the walls along the bank. This passage features curved niches at either end, a window opening over the water, and a door opening with two steps leading down to the water.
The interior has not been inspected but is reputed to contain early 18th-century panelling and a chimney-piece.
