Description

Churchill Cottages is a house row dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and late 19th centuries. The original structure has a timber-framed core. A hall range is present, with a cross-wing to the right, and 19th-century additions to both the left and right ends. The left addition is constructed of gault brick, while the ground floor of the cross-wing is red brick in Flemish bond, with tile hanging on the first floor. The addition to the right is also of red brick in Flemish bond. The roof of the left addition is hipped, with a low ridge. The hall range’s roof is hipped down to a gablet. The cross-wing’s ridge and eaves are higher than those of the hall, and it has a hipped form to the street, which continues along the addition to the right, also hipped to its right end. There are several stacks: a rear stack to the left, a stack in the front slope of the roof off-centre to the left of the hall range, and a large brick ridge stack at the junction of the cross-wing and the right addition. The fenestration is irregular, with a total of 6 casement windows. Half-glazed doors are located at numbers 1 and 2, a glazed door is found at number 3 within a late 20th-century flat-roofed brick porch, a boarded door serves number 4, and a half-glazed door with a segmental head serves number 5. The interiors have not been inspected.
