Description
23 Barton Street is a house in a row, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a tiled roof, standing three storeys tall with a basement and two windows on the front. The first and second floors have 16-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has 12-pane sashes and a 19th-century four-panel flush door with a transom light to the right, all beneath a full-width fascia. There are two grilles for the basement. The house has a moulded stone eaves cornice above a hipped roof and a large chimney stack on the left side, along with a long back wing.
Inside, there is a tiled throughway leading to a hall that features a fine Victorian staircase. The ground floor has been altered in the late 19th century, with the front room displaying a heavy moulded 19th-century transverse beam. It is said that this house was once Barnes Bakery, and there is an older framed malthouse located behind it.
