Description

No. 24 Barton Street is a late 18th-century house located at the end of a row. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a tile roof behind a rebuilt parapet. The right return wall is rendered, and there is a brick stack. The building has three storeys and a basement, with a single window. The front showcases wide tripartite plate-glass sashes with mullion boxes, set under brick voussoirs that have a central plain key and cornice, all resting on deep stone cills. The ground floor includes a blocked former 19th-century pilaster shop front, with a blank bay to the left and an 18-pane display window above a stall riser with a grille to the basement, all topped by a fascia with a moulded cornice. To the right, there is a 19th-century glazed door within a pilaster doorcase that supports an open pediment above an arched fanlight. A large rebuilt brick stack is positioned to the left. The back wall features a replacement aluminium sash window with segmental heads, above a well-preserved 19th-century glazed conservatory.

Inside, the principal room is located off the throughway, with a staircase to the left. The basement, accessed by brick steps with timber nosings, is divided into two parts: the front half, which originally had steps from the pavement, boasts a heavy beamed ceiling and a series of deep square recesses in the outer walls. The back half has a brick floor and features a wide transverse segmental brick vault.
