Description
No. 56 Church Street is a narrow-fronted house that is part of a row, featuring an early 19th-century front built on earlier structures. The house is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork and has a tiled roof. It stands three storeys high with a basement and has one window. The windows are 16-pane sashes set beneath brick voussoirs on stone cills. There is a pilaster shop front with the door located on the left side, and a grille under the voussoirs leading to the basement. A tall brick chimney stack is positioned on the left ridge, while the right return gable is rendered.
The interior was inspected only at the ground floor level. Both party walls are timber-framed. The front room features two transverse beams with early joists and a small fireplace set at an angle to the right, along with a 19th-century flush four-panel door leading to the staircase. The rear room, which is slightly angled compared to the front, also contains two transverse beams and early joists, with its right-hand wall adjoining a small external courtyard.
