Description
No. 53 Church Street is a house located at the end of a row, which also faces Mill Street. It dates back to the early 16th century and features large-panel timber-framing with diagonal tension bracing and plaster fill, underbuilt in brick. The house has a steeply pitched tile roof with a brick stack. Its layout is parallel, with a first-floor room that was originally open to the roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a single-window design.
On the front, there is a two-light gabled dormer above a two-light casement window, which is situated above a two-light shop front. The return to Mill Street includes a three-light casement window above a nine-pane window, and to the right, there is a 20th-century part-glazed door set on one stone step. The first floor jetties slightly over both fronts, and to the right, it shares a stack made of 17th-century brickwork with No. 54. The roof has a hipped end that returns.
Inside, the structure has been altered, but some details remain, including a winder stair located at the rear behind the inserted brick stack, exposed square framing on the first floor, and an attic that features wind braces on the front and rear roof pitches, although the roof itself is not accessible.
