Description

75 Church Street is a house in a row, dating from the 15th or early 16th century, with a front that was modified in the 20th century. The front is rendered and underbuilt in brick, while the main body is timber-framed with brick nogging, and there is a 20th-century brick rear gable. The roofs are covered in slate and tile. Originally, the house had a jettied front to the parallel front range, with a deep wing leading to a courtyard, and entry was from a side passage.

The front of the house is two storeys high with two windows. The ground floor features 8 over 8 sash windows, while the first floor has 20th-century casements. There is a central 18th-century six-panel door on a single step, and to the left, there is a 20th-century glazed door leading to the passage. The front roof slope is slated, while the other roofs are tiled. There is a brick stack to the right of the passage, located behind the ridge. The back wing is constructed in box framing, with a door in the throughway and another in the wing; this area was formerly divided into three dwellings.

Inside, the house retains much early work, including a compartmental ceiling in the ground floor front room, evidence of the former jettied front, and a recessed 'shell' cabinet above a fielded cupboard door. There are various 18th-century panelled doors and one very thin three-plank door that may date from the 17th century. The early 19th-century staircase features stick balusters and Doric newels. The back wing has some wind bracing in the roof. The historical qualities of the house are somewhat concealed by later modifications, but the interior has seen little alteration in recent times. The throughway also provides access to No. 74.
