Description
No. 72 Church Street is a house that includes a shop and workshop. The building features a 17th-century rear wing attached to an earlier block that was remodeled in the late 18th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick, with a timber-framed rear wall, and has a tile roof with brick stacks. The building has three storeys and a basement, with two windows on the front. The upper floors have 12-pane sash windows with deep flush stone lintels and stone cills, while the ground floor has plain sash windows set in painted brickwork, along with a grille for the basement. To the right, there is a six-panel door within a broad timber frame that leads to a throughway providing access to the property. The building features a coped parapet, two stacks on the right side, and an additional gable stack at the rear wing, which is primarily brick but retains some timber-framing on the west wall. Inside, there are various beams, a timber-framed back wall, and a tight spiral staircase made of brick and timber leading to the basement, which has a brick floor and very heavy joists. This property is a notable example of historic elements in a Tewkesbury town house and continues to function as a workshop, dwelling, and shop.
